Article Title: Two women reach the top
By: Bob Burns, Post-Tribune Correspondent
Women have made inroads into many business fields once dominated by men, usually by walking the same hard road.
Two female commercial real estate brokers in Northwest Indiana are among them, although both said they do not think of their field as being male-dominated.
Troyanne Libassi and Mardi Katz are the only two women in Northwest Indiana with the Certified Commercial Investments Member designation, a measure of their success, and are among just eight females in Indiana with the recognition.
The designation is given after a rigorous series of classes and passing numerous tests.
Libassi works in Hobart’s Commercial In-Sites office on U.S. 30, where two men, Mike Lunn and owner Dave Lasser, also have the CCIM designation.
“We are proud to have Troyanne Libassi on our staff,” Lasser said. “The CCIM designation is well known among real estate brokers and major players in commercial real estate.”
Libassi, who joined Commercial In-Sites in February, specializes in leasing office space. Among others, she represents the two former Bank One-owned office buildings at 8585 Broadway in Merrillville and the 504 Broadway office in Gary.
Enterprise Office Center at U.S. 30 and U.S. 41 in Schererville also is a client.
“I do a lot of networking with brokers across the country, both men and women,” she said, “and the CCIM designation really helps. They know what level of knowledge you have attained to get it.
“Brokers in other parts of the country often have clients looking for office space here or in the Chicago market and will refer them to us because of the connection.”
Libassi said she was fortunate to have scheduled her classes in Indianapolis or Illinois. Many aspiring for the designation travel across the U.S. to get their training.
Both women emphasized the long, lonely trek through the education process, but found it worth the effort for them and their clients.
